When getting to know Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods, it’s easy for Rogers Park to get lost in the shuffle. Situated on the far north side of Chicago, it’s a neighborhood that stands out for its affordability, rich history, and unbeatable location along Lake Michigan. I happen to call Rogers Park my home, so I may be a little biased! But read on, and you’ll discover, as I have, why Rogers Park is Chicago’s hidden gem of a neighborhood.
A Look Back at Rogers Park History
Rogers Park started as a small farming community in the mid-1800s. It was named after Philip Rogers, an Irish settler who traded goods with Native Americans in the area. Over the years, the neighborhood grew as immigrants from Germany, Poland, and other parts of Europe settled there. First incorporated as a village of Illinois in 1878, by 1893 Rogers Park officially became part of Chicago, and its population expanded further with new waves of residents from around the world.
The architecture in Rogers Park reflects this layered history. You’ll find vintage apartment buildings, classic two-flats, and sprawling single-family homes. Walking through the neighborhood feels like stepping into a living timeline of Chicago’s evolution.
Location, Location, Location
Rogers Park is located at the northern edge of Chicago, bordering Evanston. It’s about nine miles from downtown, which makes it far enough for a quieter pace but still accessible via public transportation. The CTA Red Line runs through the neighborhood, with multiple stops at Howard, Jarvis, Morse, and Loyola; as well as the Metra train. Several bus routes connect you to the rest of the city. For those who drive, Lake Shore Drive and Sheridan Road provide scenic routes to other parts of Chicago.
One of the biggest perks of living here? The proximity to Lake Michigan. Rogers Park has some of the most accessible and beautiful lakefront areas in the city. Beaches like Loyola and Leone fill up with swimmers and sun-bathers in the summer months, and serve as a popular walking destination in the cooler months.

Rogers Park is home to a wide variety of restaurants and cuisines. Devon Avenue, which cuts through the southern edge of the neighborhood, is famous for its Indian and Pakistani eateries. Arts and Culture
Art is everywhere in Rogers Park. Murals line the streets, and local galleries showcase work from emerging and established artists. Community events like the Glenwood Avenue Artists’ Market and live music nights keep the neighborhood’s creative energy thriving. For attached single-family homes, the median sales price for 2024 was $223,250. The average time on market for homes in Rogers Park is 32 days, with 412 closed sales in 2024.
